The Chancellor has set aside a special discretionary fund to match gifts made by active or retired faculty or staff, by students, and by the surviving spouses or partners of faculty and staff, who contribute financial support to graduate fellowships or need-based undergraduate scholarships through endowment through June 30, 2012. The Chancellor’s goal is to encourage faculty, staff and students to partner with the campus to ensure that the brightest graduate and undergraduate students are able to attend Berkeley regardless of their financial means.
For every gift or pledge you make, the Chancellor will match your contribution dollar for dollar. There is no minimum amount required, and the maximum that will be matched is $250,000 per individual. Only gifts directed to any graduate fellowship or any needs-based undergraduate scholarship endowment fund will be matched. Donors may choose from a list of existing fellowships or scholarships, or may choose to create their own fund, based on established minimum thresholds. Gifts cannot be further restricted beyond need.
Berkeley is committed to keeping its doors open to the most talented graduate and undergraduate students regardless of their financial means. With rising costs to educate our students, we must provide additional funding through endowment to lessen the student financial burden. Today, many of Berkeley’s students must take on significant work and debt to finance their education. Your many contributions as a member of Berkeley’s faculty, staff, or student body help to ensure that the academic experiences of our students are rich and rewarding, but financial support is also critical to their success.
Until the early 1990s, Berkeley received state funding that was equal to the payout of a healthy endowment at one of its private peer institutions. However, when Harvard’s endowment passed $10 billion in 1994, the competitive environment changed. Although state funding has remained relatively stable — providing one-third of Berkeley’s annual budget — it cannot keep pace with the growing cost of maintaining preeminence. To remain competitive and to continue to offer superior educational opportunity in the public domain, Berkeley must substantially grow its endowment. It is critical to the future of our democratic society that private universities not provide the only option for a world-class education. Investments in Berkeley’s endowment will provide critical support for our students, now and in perpetuity.
Yes! Gifts made from this point forward will count toward the campaign, and the Chancellor’s match will continue until June 30, 2012.
The Named Fund Initiative was created in October 2005 by the Graduate Division to enable current and emeriti faculty to establish named endowments for graduate support with a minimum donation of $10,000. Nearly $2 million dollars has been raised through the Named Fund Initiative, benefiting graduate students in over 20 schools, colleges, and departments at Berkeley.
The Named Fund Initiative is slated to end on June 1, 2007. The Chancellor’s Challenge will run through June 30, 2012 to ensure that all faculty, emeriti faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to partner with the Chancellor in building Berkeley’s endowment for current and future generations of students.|
